FALMOUTH, Mass – The joy of vacationing on Cape Cod includes 559 miles of scenic coastline on the Atlantic Ocean with proximity to over 100 beaches, scores of affordable hotel accommodations with family friendly attractions and restaurants that offer mouth-watering menus for the 5.5 million tourists who visit annually, with 65% of them visiting in the summer.
For the savvy golfer, Cape Cod features 40 golf courses with 27 of them open to the public with prominent golf course architects – Rees Jones, Geoffrey Cornish, Brain Silva, Skip Wogan – creating fabled fairways and greens which goal is to spend quality time on.
One of my favorite courses is The Cape Club, located only 8 miles from the Bourne Bridge in North Falmouth. Once known as Ballymeade Country Club, the property offers vacationers and members the luxury and amenities of a private course without club dues, assessments and fees. This semi-private 18 hole par 72 course, has undergone a complete renovation of the course and clubhouse since owner Michael Intoccia, a seasoned real estate developer, took over in 2015.
“Your golf experience at The Cape Club will be first-class starting at the bag drop, to clubhouse, to range, to the putting green and then to the impressive, well-manicured 18-hole layout,” said Director of Golf James Cook. “And what better way to spend quality time with friends and family than a visit to the popular Cape Grill Restaurant after your round.”
The Cape Club offers golf stay-and-play packages with a variety of popular vacation accommodations such as Seacrest Beach Hotel, Inn on the Square in Falmouth and the striking vacation homes of New Seabury. In April 2025 The Cape Club will open three 10-room golf cottages only a pitching wedge away from the first tee attracting golfers from all over as well as ideal for wedding destination.
“I’ve golfed everywhere on the Cape and The Cape Club is absolutely the best semi-private club in the region including the Plymouth and south coast area,” said Andrew Martin, 74, a retired commercial real estate executive. “There has been a complete transformation for the better since the Ballymeade days. I like what the new owner has done with all new tees, fairways and greens. It’s probably the Cape’s best kept secret that the public can go online and tee it up here most anytime.”
The Cape Club occupies a prime, rolling, slightly elevated piece of land next to the private Sacconnesset Golf Club, where the initiation fee is over $100,000. Ballymeade was a popular venue but got terrible reviews. Since Intoccia took ownership the routing largely stayed the same but it is unrecognizable outside of that. Tee boxes were rebuilt and greens reshaped and restructured under the direction and control of Ron Despain, Vice President of Golf Course Development for Troon Golf. Fairways were widened and bunkers recrafted and filled with pristine Augusta white sand.
From the tips, The Cape Club can stretch out to 6,855 yards with slope of 138 and offers four sets of tees. The elevation changes are noticeable and on a clear day you can get a peak of Nantucket Sound on No. 11 tee box. The course is dotted with 100 bunkers of all sizes and shapes. Tee times are available to the public online up to 7 days and the approximate 175 members can book 14 days ahead. A good year produces about 25,000 rounds. The 20,000 square foot clubhouse offers banquet space, groom and bridal suites, golf shop, meeting space and the Cape Grille.
From bag drop to starter to cart girl to pro shop, services at The Cape Club are centered on a “member for a day” theme, meaning amenities and service will make guests feel as if they are a member. The course has received numerous awards for “Best Public Course on Cape Cod.” The Cape Club owns two sister properties: Cape Club of Sharon (formerly Spring Valley Country Club and Cape Club of Palm City formerly The Fox Club (Florida).
Cape Club of Falmouth will become an even strong golf destination with the addition of golfer villas and lodging on site. Three villas are under construction and slated to open in 2025. Each villa will have separate and distinct 8 bedroom – golfer friendly layout with four bedrooms configured on each of the two floors – each with their own bathroom, patio or veranda and private access. This will create 32 onsite rooms in 2025 (with more in planning/development phase to bring that to 80 total) making it a perfect retreat for foursomes, buddy trips, board retreats, family golf getaways, or for the reunions/wedding parties and other special gatherings.
Every day is a good day to golf when on vacation on Cape Cod, even better when the weather is perfect and you choose The Cape Club of Falmouth!
