JAMESTOWN, Rhode Island – For decades Newport Rhode Island has earned world-wide reputation as the perfect seaside destination for people of mostly high income pedigrees.
Newport is home to some of the wealthiest people in the world and a grand street in the center of showcases dozens of magnificent mansions.
Wealthy families like the Vanderbilts summered in Newport. And some of these families liked to play golf. So, in 1893 Newport Country Club was founded. Newport C.C. hosted the first U.S. Open in 1895. But what about regular golfers who are visiting the Newport area and would like to tee it up for some golf by the sea?
The answer to that is Jamestown Golf Course.
Hop on the Claiborne Pell bridge and you will glide into the quaint village of Jamestown. Soon you will spot the Jamestown Golf Course. Jamestown is a nine-hole golf course that opened for play in 1895 and welcomes the public. The scenic course is surrounded by Narragansett Bay, and the scenery makes the course even more enjoyable.
The fairways are fairly flat making it an easy stroll by the sea. The course plays just over 6,000 yards from the tips, but the greens are small and demand accurate approach shots.
As you tee it up on the opening 300-yard par-4 hole breathe in the sea air and start your journey by the sea. After a couple of holes, you should feel relaxed so why not take a big swing and see if you can reach the green on the 279-yard par-4 third hole? Jamestown is a very popular course but is still well maintained.
The web site lists green fees for 9 holes: $26. on weekdays and $28 on weekends. No tee times are taken at Jamestown. But if you are in Newport, it’s a scenic 15 minute ride over the bridge to and well worth your time.
The clubhouse provides refreshments and is always full of locals who welcome newcomers to their home course. If needed, power-carts and pull-carts are available.
