Does it get any better than this?
Father’s Day came two weeks early for Dougie MacIntyre at the RBC Canadian Open since his son Robert won the tournament by one stroke over Ben Griffin. Dougie was instrumental in the win since he caddied for Robert and gave him some fatherly advice after his son scored an unfortunate one over par on Saturday’s first nine holes. The advice worked since Robert shot 5-under on the second nine for a four-shot lead.
Sunday’s round was a matter of the younger MacIntyre keeping his head and despite bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 he rebounded with a birdie on 15 and pars on the last three holes.
Dougie MacIntyre answered the call from his son who has been searching for a permanent caddie but there’s no word if the duo will continue. They are the first son and father player-caddie winning team since Heath Slocum and his dad accomplished it in 2005 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. https://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard
YUKA SASO WINS HER 2nd U.S. WOMEN’S Open
Lancaster Country Club was the scene of a dramatic finish to the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open as Yuka Saso became the youngest to win two Opens with a 68 on Sunday. She also was the champion in 2021 after a three-hole playoff against Nasa Hataoka at The Olympic Club.
Drama was a persistent theme as Saso, after a birdie on the final round’s second hole took four putts to get in on the par-3 sixth for a double bogey. Her second nine was masterful though scoring four birdies, four pars and a single bogey to win by three over Hinako Shibuno also from Japan.
It was not a home-friendly U.S. venue for Americans either, as only 15 were among the 75 players who made the cut, led by Andrea Lee, Ally Ewing and amateur Catherine Park. “Pars and birdies feel like gold right now,” Minjee Lee, a two-time major winner and leader after 54 holes said on Friday before exploding with a 78 in the final round to finish T-9. The cut line fell at a record 8-over with only Saso (-4) and Hinako Shibuno (-1) under par. https://www.uswomensopen.com/
LIV PLAYER WINS ANOTHER EUROPEAN TITLE
Englishman Laurie Canter had never won on the DP World Tour but that all changed over the weekend when the 34-year-old veteran won the Porsche European Open in Hamburg, Germany. Canter is a reserve or fill-in player on the LIV Golf circuit and has played in two of their events this season.
Canter was tied after 54-holes and though it was touch and go he made three birdies on the back nine Sunday for a minus 13 total beating out second place finishers Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and South African Thriston Lawrence by two strokes.
Canter was quoted after the win saying, “Now that I’ve done it it’s going to open up some opportunities for me. If I’m going to try and climb the world rankings and get myself up and playing in the biggest tournaments in the world you have to know how to win and I think you only get that belief once you do it. Hopefully it means I can push on and go from strength to strength.”
