BOSTON, Mass – LIV Golf, the newly formed golf tour that rivals the PGA Tour, and according to Sports Business Journal is the No. 1 topic of conversation this year among sports fans, has announced that its 2023 schedule will hold 14 tournaments and total purse of $405 million.
LIV Golf is expected to formally announce the dates and sites of the 14 events this week. NewEngland.Golf has learned that the 2023 season and the 48-man field consisting of 12 four-man teams will remain unchanged.
Also, sources have confirmed that the tentative schedule includes a return to The International, the weekend of June 9-11. The Oaks Course at The International hosted a memorable 54-hole tournament over Labor Day weekend, won by Dustin Johnson in a dramatic playoff.
In its announcement, LIV Golf said that none of the 2023 tournaments will conflict with golf’s four major championships so that the best players in the game will always be able to make their own choices about where to play.
“LIV Golf’s expanding global platform will add a new dimension to the golf ecosystem as we know it, one that provides an opportunity for players and fans around the world to help maximize our beloved sport’s true potential,” said Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf, in the press release. “”Our franchise model will bring new energy and excitement to fans from all corners of the world, establishing a league of teams to connect and grow with. LIV Golf is committed to growing the game now and for the future, and we are proud to turn these dreams into a reality.”
The LIV Golf League will start in February 2023. Following the successful end to its inaugural series in October at Trump Doral, three new venues have been added: Mexico, Singapore, and Spain. The new LIV Golf League will visit six countries and nine of the 14 events will be held in the United States.
LIV Golf League is expected to continue its relationship with former President Donald Trump and his golf properties. Trump Doral will again serve as the site for the Miami location, along with Trump Bedminster for the New Jersey site. Trump National in Potomac Falls, Va., is believed to be in the running for D.C. LIV stop.
New England golf fans were treated to four top golf events last summer with the U.S. Open at The Country Club June 16-19; The Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands (CT) June 23-26; LIV Golf at The International Sept. 2-4 and the USGA Men’s Senior Amateur Championship at The Kittansett Club August 23-29.
