ALGARVE, Portugal – On my most recent trip to the Algarve, the South coast of Portugal, I finally got to play Monte Rey Golf & Country Club, which had been on my bucket list for a long time.
Ever since it’s inception in the year 2007, Monte Rei has been consistently ranked as the top golf course in Portugal and among the best golf courses in Continental Europe.

At the heart of the club is the award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, the “Golden Bear’s” only layout in Portugal, one of Europe’s best golf destinations. Designed by the legendary Nicklaus himself, this 18-hole, par-72 championship layout boasts a number of spectacular holes on undulating terrain where you feel like you are alone on the course as every hole is secluded (and no other holes are visible).
The course challenges golfers of all abilities with a layout that blends natural terrain with strategic demands. Water comes into play on eleven of the holes, adding risk-reward decision-making and punishing inaccurate shots.

One of the unique features of Monte Rei’s philosophy is its emphasis on pace of play and exclusivity: tee times are spaced twelve minutes apart, allowing groups to enjoy a relaxed round without feeling rushed and helping to preserve the tranquil atmosphere that defines the experience.
Monte Rei isn’t just about golf — it’s a full luxury resort destination. On-site lodging includes elegantly appointed villas and residences on property. Options range from villas and multi-bedroom homes with private pools to stylish clubhouse residences and penthouses, all equipped with amenities that leave nothing to be desired.
