FALL RIVER, Mass – It’s hard to believe, that in the midst of the busy manufacturing city of Fall River, Massachusetts lies a ‘golfers’ paradise’.
Secluded in nature with unique architectural style, Fall River Country Club is an 18-hole hidden gem, located along the banks of the scenic Taunton River. If you’ve never played this course, you need to add it to your bucket list, as it is one of the most fun, yet challenging courses you’ll play. Built in 1895 as a nine-hole course, Fall River Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Massachusetts where golf legends like Bobby Jones and Harry Vardon have played. In 1975 it was expanded to a par 70 (par 72 for ladies) layout containing the original nine. The dramatic drive into the country club property awakens your senses as you weave through federally designed wild, over an old wooden railroad-tie bridge leading you to the historic full service clubhouse that offers indoor/outdoor seating, pro-shop and outdoor snack bar.
Responding to the USGA’s “Tee it Forward” initiative to grow the game of golf and appeal to a greater variety of skill levels, Fall River CC expanded their tee boxes from three to four with three of them rated for both men and women. This course is not a pushover!
Yardage from the men’s Gold tees is 6,304 yards, and the Blue, Red, and White tees measure 5,979, 5,601, and 4,462 yards respectively for both men and women. Ladies get very little distance advantage playing from the same tee boxes as the men; thus it is a much more challenging experience for ladies which is reflected in the differing slope ratings for men and women .
The course features a fun run of fairways that offer layout variety and several distinctive, memorable holes. Despite the many layout challenges, including rolling, sloping fairways, steep uphill fairway shots, elevated tiered greens and blind tee shots, the beauty of the course will certainly distract you and help you forget how badly you may be playing! The surprise vistas and challenges that continually pop-up demand carefully thought-out shots and precision.
Memorable holes? To name a few, first, the signature par-3 third hole features a downhill tee shot over water to a well guarded elevated green. The tenth and eleventh holes meander alongside captivating views of the Taunton River. The par-3 twelfth with its tight, severely sloped terrain, demands a precise downhill tee shot to the pint-sized green.
