ORLANDO, Florida – Every decent player knows the key to hitting scoring shots, the ones critical to posting a good score, is control of trajectory and spin.
When less than a full swing is required, or the ball is in the rough or in sand, then controlling spin is more difficult and that means a wedge’s grooves become the major factor in being able to pull off the desired shot.
At Callaway Golf addressing this problem was a task for Chief Wedge Designer Roger Cleveland and his team with the result being the new JAWS MD5 wedges with what the company is calling “The Most Aggressive Grooves in Golf.”
Aside from having one of the catchiest names around, JAWS is an interesting advance for wedges. The innovative groove design has major differences from the previous model MD4 and a very tight manufacturing spec. The new grooves are milled with walls, edges and angles having the closest tolerances Callaway has ever been able to achieve.
JAWS grooves are milled with a 37º wall angle, much sharper than the 5º wall angle of the MD4, which makes them ideal from 80 yards and especially for producing the much desired one-hop-and-stop trajectory. They also use Callaway’s Groove-In-Groove micro millings on the areas between the JAWS grooves which gives more grip to the ball’s cover and therefore added spin.
