HYANNIS, Mass – It might not have been the “Mother” of all 50th Reunion parties, but it was close.
And, if there was one thing the Cardinal Spellman High School Class of ‘73 learned five decades ago, it was how to throw a party.
The Class of ’73 had a cast of characters and most showed up at Cape Cod Irish Village Saturday September 30 from 6-11 p.m. Led by the raucous, and sometimes raunchy duo of Andrew Clancy and John Kearney, the 40-plus attendees enjoyed a “Back to the Future” evening complete with music, food, cocktails, trivia, dancing, gifts and most important – fondly reminiscing about the good olde days at “Spellman.”
“The Class of ’73 was special and we proved tonight that we can still party with the best of them some 50 years later,” said Reunion Chair and former Class Vice-President Andrew Clancy. “Clearly, everyone had a great time and there were lots of happy, smiling faces, only this time with a few more wrinkles and gray hair.”
Reunion Committee members spent eight months planning the event, meeting 12 times by Zoom, planning the festivities hosted at one of Cape Cod’s premier and centrally located desinations – Cape Cod Irish Village. The committee included Andrew Clancy, John Kearney, Kathy (Alward) Smith, Jeanne Holmes, Trish (Conley) Cirillo, Susan (Howes) Ashton, Tom Gorman and help from videographer Patrick Madigan.
Classmates who attended included Bill Reidy and Ellie Higgins, Carol Irwin Canducci, Diane Faherty Garofalo, Diane Natalie Lassonde, Ellen Leary Milan, Theresa (D’Alessandro) MacVarish, Helen Peterson Regan, Jean Antonellis Sacra, Jeanne Holmes, John Kearney, Joyce Kelly Bailey, Judith Hardiman Ferzoco, Karen Lee, Karen Myers Crabtree, Kathy Alward & Gerry Smith, Marc & Carolyn Sheehan Kawalick, Mary Umano Federico, Nancy Nasuti Whipple, Pat Madigan, Philip Kirby, Ralph & Trish Conley Cirillo, Rosemary Gracia and Alan McRae, Rosemary Kelly, Steven Horsman, Susan Howes Ashton, Susan Rawding Lee, Susan Tiso, Honorable Suzanne Bump, Thomas Gorman, James M. McNeil, Mary McGovern Moscato, Andrew Clancy, Robert & Marian McGee, Patrick Heffernan.
The 50th Reunion weekend kicked off Friday September 29 at the 738 Court Street Brockton school alma mater. About 30 classmates were welcomed by school President Daniel Hodes. After a tour of the school which stirred up lots of warm and fuzzy memories, “Golden Diplomas” were presented to alumni in the ancient and honorable “Sistine” Chapel.
“This Reunion was a once-in-a lifetime event that was fun and memorable,” said John Kearney, who MC’d the engaging 30-question “School Trivia” portion of the program. “We had fun 50 years ago at Spellman and this weekend was a blast from the past. Long live the Class of ’73.”
Committee member Jeanne Holmes confirmed a rumor that another class reunion event may be brewing in two years when the ‘mates turn the unmentionable seven-O.
