Steve Pike Anywhere: Sea Island

Sea Island, located on the southeastern coast of Georgia, features five miles of private beach, a Beach Club, tennis center, Yacht Club, and three championship golf courses, including Seaside and Plantation, home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic.

SEA ISLAND, Georgia – Sea Island, the legendary resort here on the coast of southern Georgia, has unveiled the remaining three components of a $30 million enhancement initiative, including the 4,200 square-foot King Cottage, the re-designed Plantation Course, and Sea Strike & Pub, a new six-lane bowling alley and restaurant.

The King Cottage at The Lodge, just steps from the new Sea Island Golf Performance Center, promises to be a great headquarters for golf buddy trips. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Cottage features four bedrooms, each with its own full bathroom and private porch; a large living area for entertaining; a catering kitchen with executive chef; and most notably, a private, state-of-the-art hitting bay behind the driving range.

Plantation, Sea Island’s oldest course, re-opened this past October following a nearly year-long renovation by Davis Love III and his brother, Mark. Love Golf Design used influences from golf architecture legends Walter Travis, Donald Ross, C.B McDonald, and Seth Raynor to create the new Plantation, which stands as a terrific complement to the resort’s famed Seaside Course.

The golf course features strategic bunkering and classic green complexes, which plays through majestic oaks and along the St. Simons Sound.

Sea Island has unveiled the remaining three components of a $30 million enhancement initiative, including the 4,200 square-foot King Cottage, the re-designed Plantation Course, and Sea Strike & Pub, a new six-lane bowling alley and restaurant.

“With the significant changes, including less than half of the original bunkering, the course plays fair and fun,’’ said Sea Island Director of Golf Brannon Veal. “The green complexes are the most fun part and have an array of architectural nods to the past. The majority of bunkering is flat bottomed bunkers providing a different look than any of the other courses.

“The long views throughout the course of the Atlantic Ocean and marshes, along with the massive Oaks, along with the fun green complexes, will create memorable experiences. The course plays wonderfully for all handicap levels.’’

The Sea Strike & Pub, the resort’s first six-lane bowling alley, is located at the Sea Island Beach Club. The pub features craft cocktails and an elevated gastropub-style menu, incorporating shared plates and bar classics, such as a giant Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese (my favorite) and an assortment of flatbread pizzas. TVs all-round, classic games such as shuffleboard and darts, and comfortable seating lend to a lively atmosphere day and night.

The debut of these three amenities and facilities complement other substantial investments Sea Island has made over the past two years, particularly to enhance the golf experience. Those include the addition of the new Golf Performance Center, six “golf in, golf out” cottages, the 18-hole Speedway putting course, a pool and pool house, extended practice facility, and short game area, all overlooking the Atlantic.
