HINGHAM, Mass – South Shore Country Club, a semi-public golf course, is a favorite among golfers down on the south shore of Boston.
With its yardage and distance measuring at 6,470 yards from the tips and 5,033 yards from the forward tees, it’s not the length that gets you. It’s the undulating fairways and elevated rolling greens with false fronts that can provide a challenging and interesting course for golfers of all skill levels.
Grown-in natural areas or trouble can be found in and around the course on many holes if you are not hitting them straight that day. Some strategy is needed to play this course well.

If it’s your first time playing here, you’ll notice many blind shots on the course due to the undulations, and deep swells from the fairways. After you play this course once, you’ll want to come back and get another crack at it as you start to understand how to play the course in less strokes.
My husband and I recently played here and found the course to be drier than normal, but after talking with Head Golf PGA Professional, Chris Riley, he stated “the course is playing fast and firm. Not as appealing to the eye but that’s when South Shore Country Club plays at its best in my opinion. You can play a variety of shots into and around the greens that normally are much more difficult when the conditions are lush and slow.”

South Shore Country Club is a proud treasure and an asset for the town of Hingham, who purchased the golf club over 30 years ago. The town has done a wonderful job of creating a golf course and community where anyone can play. The maintenance and work they have done to resurrect the original design of architect, Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek in 1922 have been outstanding.
South Shore Country Club is open to the public most days unless there is a tournament or special golf outing. During the winter months, they open up their indoor simulator called The Tour. A hidden gem consisting of 3 simulator bays open to the general public.
For golf amenities that you typically get with a private golf club, South Shore Country Club offers a membership option for those who want access to priority tee times, a robust men’s and women’s golf association, weekly league play, special events, and member tournaments.

And for those who want to visit the 19th hole after a round of golf or sit and enjoy a meal overlooking the golf course, you definitely should visit “The Greenside Grille” with surprisingly good quality, fresh menu options that will satisfy and impress most anyone.
South Shore Country Club is easy to get to from Boston as it is less than a 5-minute walk from the Greenbush Train Station, is accessible by commuter boat (with 5 minute Taxi or Uber) and by car (35-minute drive).
