Many putter makers have jumped on the zero-torque bandwagon which is the most talked about putter development in several years.
Callaway Golf’s Odyssey is a real force in the zero-torque market segment with several Ai-S2S models. The addition of the S2S Tri-Hot is an extension of that family but a with difference namely by using a multi-material head engineers were able to shift the center of gravity forward so the shaft can be attached through the topline at the center of the face rather than towards the heel. This is significant since it does away with the user having to lean the shaft forward to ensure the face will be square to the swing arc through the entire stroke which may be required with some other zero torque designs.
According to Callaway, consistent shaft lean may be a problem and can restrict some players benefiting from the idea of zero torque, i.e., doing away with the need to manipulate the face rotation for the entire stroke.
A couple of the other S2S Tri-Hots’ interesting features include the selection of three favorite shapes making a switch from one of their previous models much easier. Secondly the artificial intelligence designed face has two layers. Both are urethane but the inner layer is firmer and the outer layer softer which helps improve control of ball speed across the face in combination with the “aggressive” 19° grooves.
Players will notice immediately the S2S Tri-Hots toe-hang is 90° UP and the Jailbird Cruiser comes with a 38” shaft, a heavier head plus a longer 17” grip for those who like that setup.
