Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeón Golf Course Earns ‘Top 10’ Ranking

Mission Inn Resort is a four-season resort located in the rolling hills of Central Florida’s Lake County in the town of Howey-in-the-Hills, 35 minutes northwest of Orlando, featuring two championship golf courses.

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Florida – Mission Inn Resort & Club’s venerable El Campeón layout has been named one of the “Top 10 Golf Courses in Orlando” by Money Inc., which praised it for having a “ton of character and history.”

El Campeón (“The Champion”) is one of the oldest and popular courses in the southern United States and has been perennially honored as one of the best layouts in Florida. It has been the site of numerous junior, collegiate and professional events throughout its storied history, including the Class 1A, 2A and 3A Florida High School Golf State Championships held Oct. 29-Nov. 6. On the books for 2020 are PGA Tour qualifying events for the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in January and Mackenzie Tour in March.

“This resort offers some of the best holes Orlando has to offer,” Liz Flynn of Money Inc. writes of El Campeón’s No. 3 ranking. “It’s important to note that this place was built in 1917. It’s got a ton of character and history, and you’ll definitely feel it while you’re there.”

El Campeón has won numerous awards over the years, including most recently being named to the “World’s Top 100 Golf Courses” by Golfscape.com and one of the “Top 200 Resort Golf Courses” by Golfweek. An original member of the Florida Historic Golf Trail, El Campeón offers a classic design accentuating the landscape’s 85-foot elevation changes that are unique to the central Florida region. The course plays 7,001 yards from the back tees.

Mission Inn features 176 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom accommodations in a quaint, courtyard setting, offering four restaurants, two championship 18-hole golf courses, a luxury spa and a wide range of recreational activites.

Mission Inn Resort & Club features two other golf courses — Las Colinas (“The Hills”), which opened in 1992, and El Dorado, a new par-3, 18-hole executive layout that opened this summer. The resort also offers a 30,000-square-foot driving range, with Tifway Bermuda grass tees, practice bunkers with target greens, and 10,000-square-foot putting green.

The resort is situated amid citrus groves in central Florida’s rolling hills. Surrounded by lakes, the picturesque location features classic Spanish Colonial style architecture throughout the property; 176 graciously appointed guestrooms, suites, and villas; three restaurants; and two lounges. In addition to golf, key amenities include a tennis academy, Spa Marbella, the lakefront marine center, and miles of nature trails.
