SANIBEL ISLAND, Florida – When it comes to championship golf in a pristine gulf coast setting, The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club on Sanibel Island, a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico near Ft. Myers, delivers an incomparable experience. Year-round, golfers can enjoy 18 challenging holes of golf masterfully designed by 10 time PGA TOUR winner Mark McCumber, a Florida native, and an ASGCA member. Southwest Florida’s ‘Gulf Shore Lifestyle Magazine’ readers have chosen The Dunes the “Best Golf Course in Lee County.”
The golf course is nestled in a stunning wildlife preserve established by the Audubon Society with spectacular views, beautiful waterways and rich bermuda grass peninsulas surrounding Tifeagle greens. Although the par 70 layout only reaches to 5,800 yards, it plays much tougher with an added degree of difficulty with water in play on all the holes, gulf breezes affecting ball flight, narrow landing areas and small undulating greens. The practice facilities include a huge 275-yard appropriately aquatic driving range and a perfectly manicured practice green near the clubhouse. General Manager Brian Kautz and Director of Golf Ryan Hagerman, both PGA Professionals are available for instruction along with classes for juniors and novices.
As the crown jewel of the Inns of Sanibel Golf & Beach Resorts collection, the Dunes located on the east side of the island offers complimentary social and sports membership to all guests of the relaxing and comfortable boutique inns during their stay which includes: Sanibel Inn- the perfect family escape, Seaside Inn- nostalgic, old Florida suites and cottages, The Song of the Sea-an enchanting intimate couples retreat and Sunset Beach Resort- a 4-acre island getaway.
Tennis is as much a recreational activity as golf in Southwest Florida, and the well maintained Har-Tru courts at the Dunes Golf & Tennis Club provide members and guests a suitable and comfortable venue for smashing the ball, pick up matches and professional instruction from ATP qualified instructors at the on-site Blackwood Tennis Academy.
The center of social activity at the Dunes is the recently refurbished Clubhouse which serves lunch and dinner seven days a week prepared by Executive Chef RoRo Garat in the Dunes Restaurant. A great gathering place after a round of golf, tennis match or sunbathing at the pool is the fully stocked bar with al-fresco service as well. The Island Time Bar at the Sanibel Inn is a local favorite where it is always ‘5 o’clock somewhere.’
For a change of pace Dante’s Coal Fired Pizza is right on the Inns of Sanibel Resorts property with a polished decor, gourmet pizza menu along with Italian favorites, and an eclectic breakfast.
The Inns of Sanibel Golf & Beach Resorts are the ideal place to stay on Sanibel with easy access to sightseeing, shopping, and dining. All of the Inns are within minutes of the Dunes Golf & Tennis Club. We loved our stay, dining and golfing while in Sanibel and you will too!
