YARMOUTH, Mass – Golf isn’t necessarily the best reason to visit Cape Cod, but it sure is high on the list. With 27 public courses and 15 private facilities most with well-manicured fairways and greens and a mild regional climate, some avid golfers enjoy the unique opportunity to play 52 weeks a year.
There are championship courses like Bayberry Hills in Yarmouth, classic nine-hole courses like Highland Links in Truro that date back to the 1890s, and three of the finest par-54 courses in the country including the award-winning Blue Rock Golf Course.
Blue Rock opened to the public in 1962 when founder Pete Davenport hired top golf courses designer Geoffrey Cornish to build the first championship Par 3 course in the region. Over six decades the courses has earned kudos and praise from many including the prestigious category recently rated by Golfspan as No. 5 best Par 3 in the country. https://www.golfspan.com/par-3-golf-course
Through the years Sports Illustrated and Golf magazine both rated Blue Rock as one of the best Par 3 courses in the country, and Cape Cod Life magazine ranked it as the best golf course, Par 3 or not, in the mid-Cape.
“The three things I like best about Blue Rock is that it’s easy to book a tee time; it doesn’t take all day to play; and the course is always in good shape,” said John Weld, a long-time Cape resident and realtor with Compass Real Estate. “The course is all Par 3s and there are holes that range from 100 yards to 250 yards.”
While every hole at Blue Rock is a Par 3, many golfers will use every club in their bags. Almost all need to hit driver on No. 5, which plays 255 yards from the back tees and 239 from the whites. The third, ninth, 10th and 18th holes play over a pond. They have five sets of tees that play from 2,154 to 2,868. They have two practice putting & chipping greens and a driving range.
“We are very proud of the course and entire staff who work here,” said Matt Pitta, Director of Communications. “Our reputation is important so we offer members and public golfer’s a fair test of golf at a reasonable price and they’ve been coming back to Blue Rock year after year. If our golfers are happy, we are happy.”
Even if you hit a few stray shots, Blue Rock is one of the best walks on the Cape! It’ll have you coming back for more!
