NORTON, Mass – Three of the hottest players on the PGA Tour will be paired together when the FedEx Cup playoffs begin Thursday at the Northern Trust in Norton, Mass.
Americans Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Webb Simpson will compose the 8:26 a.m. EDT pairing off the 10th tee at TPC Boston (tee times). Thomas, Morikawa and Simpson are ranked Nos. 2, 5 and 6, respectively, in the Official World Golf Ranking. All have won since the season restart: Thomas at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational, Morikawa at the Workday Charity Open and more recently at the PGA Championship and Simpson at the RBC Heritage. They also rank 1-2-3 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Tiger Woods will be making his first start since he tied for 37th two weeks ago at the PGA Championship. Woods, a two-time winner of the FedEx Cup (2007 and 2009), will be paired with South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli and England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick at 8:37 a.m. off the 10th tee, in the group following Thomas-Morikawa-Simpson.
With Jim Herman winning his third career PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship yesterday, the PGA Tour regular season reached its conclusion. Thirty weeks, 33 tournaments, spread out over 11 months and forever known as Before COVID (BC) and After COVID (AC), now gives way to a three-week dash for the dough.
From No. 1 Justin Thomas to No. 125 Wyndham Clark, the richest postseason in professional sports begins at TPC Boston this week with The Northern Trust, the first leg of the three-event FedExCup Playoffs.
Over these three weeks, the 125 will be whittled down to one: a FedExCup Champion, who will be awarded professional golf immortality (not really)… and $15 million dollars (really!).
World No. 3 Rory McIlroy is well positioned to defend his 2019 FedExCup title, but 124 golfers have other ideas, including world No. 9 Patrick Reed who will defend his 2019 Northern Trust title.
It all starts Thursday Aug. 20 at TPC Boston.
