MARLBOROUGH, MA – This summer of nonstop sunny days in New England has gotten this golf season off to a sizzling start, and with highs finally dropping below the 90s, the links were looming.
So on a mid-70s zero-humidity weekday afternoon that may have been the best golf day of the year, it was time to head to the hills for an invigorating round at the marvelous Marlborough Country Club, a magnificent 6,171-yard track founded in 1922, now just four years from its 100-year anniversary.
For a native Western Pennsylvanian, the mild rolling rises and slopes were a welcome reminder of the golf I grew up with, with MCC presenting a nice mix of uphill and downhill tee shots making for a few near-blind ascending approach shots, blended with some straight-forward level holes amidst occasional mild doglegs.
The moment we rolled into the ample parking lot located just a lob wedge from the middle of Marlborough Center and right off Route 20, we were well aware that great golfing minds always think alike when wonderful weather beckons you to the course, yet the groups moved along at a steady pace without delay.
What was even faster than the pace of play were the lightning-quick greens that are clearly rolled frequently in this seemingly rain-free summer, which created a challenging yet fair adventure on every graded green. It quickly became obvious that even the slightest misread, particularly the downhill ones, meant each miss left potentially a longer comeback putt than the one just taken, which required total focus but basically no gimmes.
