Steve Pike Anywhere: Boca Country Club

Boca Country Club is a golf community in the northeast section of Boca Raton, situated on the border of Boca Raton and Delray Beach, comprised of twelve Villages totaling about 1,000 residences including condominiums, villas, coach homes, townhouses, and single family homes for sale.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the re-opening of the restored Boca Country Club Course, the Boca Raton Resort & Club now has back its dynamic duo of golf courses.

The Country Club Course spent much of 2018 being cleaned up and re-grassed with Celebration Bermuda grass on its fairways and tee boxes, and TifEagle Bermuda grass on its greens. Each of those grasses is identical to the grasses used to help restore the Resort Course in 2016.

“We had some of the oldest Champion Bermuda (on the greens) in South Florida,’’ said Boca Raton Resort & Club Director of Golf Jimmy Gascoigne.

The old grass often times severely impacted the playing experience at the Country Club Course, an original Joe Lee design that opened in 1985.

“Playablity was what had come and gone (at the Country Club Course) over the years,’’ Gascoigne said. “The restoration marks a return to golf and offers great parity to the our Resort Course. Now our membership has the opportunity to play two completely restored golf courses.’’

The restoration of the Boca Country Club Course, a short shuttle ride from the resort, is a good example of creating a better golf course without changing the face of the original design. The bunkering and greens complex on the Country Club Course, remained virtually unchanged. The new grasses now give the course (6,714 yards from the tips) better and sharper looks from tees to greens, while the greens themselves roll faster and more true.

Restoration on the back nine was completed first, meaning that the back side is a bit more grown in than the front side, but given some good weather and a few more weeks, the front nine will be as plush and green as the back.

“This has always been a great layout,’’ Gascoigne said. “I think the playability is going to drive more member rounds over here. And for resort guests and groups, we now have two premier courses that gives them options.

“We’re looking forward to making this more of a golf destination rather than just a boutique golf course at the resort.’’
