BELLINGHAM, Mass – The Gareau family has owned acres of pristine land in the quiet town of Bellingham for over 70 years so in 2002 they decided to create a nine-hole golf course – Bungay Brook Golf Club – that has become a local favorite.
General Manager Mark Gareau, can always be found in their fully-stocked pro shop to welcome golfers to their gem of a course.
“A lot of people have perceptions about nine-hole golf courses,” said Mark in a recent interview, “But our course is 3,136 yards from the back tees so it poses a challenge for golfers. Bungay Brook also features a 300-yard all grass driving range, which includes a large practice putting green.”
If you want to make it less demanding, the front tees play at 2300 yards with two par 5s, two par 3s and five par 4s with par of 36. If you want to practice before the round, the driving range and putting green are conveniently located next to the first tee.
The first hole at Bungay Brook is a short 309 yard par 4 with a generous fairway. Hit a good shot and you have a short iron into a large green. The greens at Bungay roll fast and true so lag it up close and tap it in for a par.
All of the holes have wide fairways and very few trees so you do not need to pull out the driver on every hole. But if you want to feel good about your game, the fourth hole is a 475-yard par 5 reachable in two. So, grab your driver and give it a rip. It has a large double green but watch out for the mammoth bunker that guards the left side.
One of my favorite holes is the 362 yard Par 4 ninth. You hit your tee shot off an elevated tee. The fairway fades to the right and a pond protects the green. It is a great finishing hole and offers a great viewing area from the clubhouse to watch groups finish their rounds.
The course from tee-to-green is always well maintained so if you have time, play another nine!
Bungay offers reduced rates for both seniors and juniors which makes it a perfect outing for Grandpa and Grandma to join the grandkids for a little quality time on the fairways.
I have played Bungay Brook dozens of times over the years, and I can attest to the pristine condition of the course.
