Charles River Country Club is an award-wining private golf club that opened in 1921. The nearly 100 year-old golf course has a long history rich in tradition and heritage.
Part of the club’s lore is its direct connection to three of the Bay State’s most iconic golf legends.
Donald Ross
Ross designed all 18 holes of Charles River Country Club in 1921. At 54-years-old, the legendary golf course designer was in the prime of his career when he laid out the Boston-area golf course.
For example in 1921, alone, Ross is credited with ten other designs, including four right here in New England: Longmeadow Country Club, Country Club of Pittsfield, Portland Country Club (Maine), and Metacomet Country Club (Rhode Island).
Francis Ouimet
Ouimet, the legendary amateur golfer who famously won the U.S. Open in 1913 at The Country Club, was a bond-holding member of Charles River from 1922 through 1927. Ouimet was also the club’s first honorary member, remaining an active member until his death in 1967.
Eddie Lowrey
Lowrey, who looped for Ouimet during his historic win in Brookline, became a bond-holding member at Charles River in 1933, twenty years after the iconic photo was taken. Lowrey, himself, was an accomplished amateur golfer – winning the 1927 Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Charles River. Lowrey was also club champion twice, 1933 and 1936.
